  Welcome to SAFARI
SAFARI Staff

SAFARI Tutoring and Mentoring Program, located at Jamestown High School, is designed to offer students academic assistance during the school day. We provide a caring and supportive environment, in which we help students identify areas of difficulty; offer subject tutoring and test preparation; and help them to prioritize, organize, and develop other crucial study habits. Interested students are referred by their Guidance Counselors.

STUDENTS

Theresa Olson is the SAFARI Coordinator and Counselor. There are two full time tutors and two part-time tutors available to academically enrich our students in a variety of subjects. Vicki Duba is our Family Outreach Worker who works on the Transition Team through Chautauqua Striders. She can help students and their families with a number of services.

ATTAINING

Our goals are to increase academic achievement, improve attendance, and decrease occurrence of negative behavior through tutoring, mentoring, and counseling. We offer incentives for students to achieve these goals. Each quarter we award students who have perfect attendance and for those who make honor and merit roll.

FUTURE

We help students with their homework, but encourage them to complete their homework on their own, so we can focus on remediation and review. We never want them to save homework for SAFARI. We have plenty of review work they can work on and they usually have a test they can prepare for with a tutor.

ASPIRATION

We help students improve their study habits as well as their organizational skills. Often times students do not do well in school because they are disorganized and misplace assignments or forget about them.

RESPECT

An important aspect of SAFARI is that we emphasize appropriate behavior. We expect our students to be courteous and treat others with respect and they will be treated with respect in return. We are here to help our students and we want our students to always feel comfortable in the SAFARI room. They can always speak to Mrs. Olson or other staff member if they ever have a problem or feel uncomfortable.

INSPIRATION

We encourage our students to try their best and work to their potential. We motivate students to complete home work assignments and study harder for tests. Sometimes students are overwhelmed with their school work, so they just don't do it. If someone is available to encourage them and help them with the assignment, it makes it more interesting and less frustrating. We are also here to listen to students and guide them in the right direction. We assist in the communication among teachers, students and parents. We act as a liaison between the students and principals when necessary. When students have problems that need further assistance, we refer them to the appropriate service. SAFARI students always have a place to go where someone cares about them.
